H.264 / H.265 Codec
The use of video compression is wide spread in the broadcast, ProAV and home video markets as method of transferring video at lower data rates that the original and allowing video to be stored on media at acceptable speed.
There are a large range of compression systems that have been developed, initially for SD video, then HD video and now for 4K video. At the forefront of 4K video compression is the H.265 (HEVC) Codec, which offers superior image quality and lower data rates that other Codec solutions available today.
Whilst H.265 ‘hard IP’ (or Video Codec Unit) is available on a range of Xilinx System on Chip devices, the path within these devices and between different blocks is not optimized for the best performance or for the high data throughput required for 4K and UHD video above 30 frames per second.
